Moving right along!

Sebs_house_jan_07Hmmm… well I am not sure how successful the last post was. Only three commented while 293 people read the item. Interesting, and even more interesting was a private e-mail I got from someone who was actually in my life in 1982 at said first doorbell ringing. She rightfully smacked me about a bit, as did the message from our new pastor on Sunday. An amazing, AMAZING sermon. Go here to listen to the sermon "True Love" – terrific and inspiring message. WOW.

Sela_jan_07(Sela, having a drink of water this morning. Tattoo on her face was from Saturday’s Birthday party.) What did she (from Trent) say? "Quit whinging and just do it." When I sat back to think about it, I do have a plan in place to take me to the next level and it is quite an intense plan:

  • Committee of Management at Union Church
  • HR Task Force at Union Church
  • Weekly Men’s Fellowship Lunch/Study when not traveling
  • Prayer Leader for the Walk To Emmaus
  • Intercessor with the Union Church Prayer Ministry
  • Alpha Course, Group Leader
  • Writing a book – thus far about 15% complete (personal testimony + miracle of the triplets)

Carys_jan_07(Carys, also with a tattoo!) All of this was put in place specifically to mature me as a Christian in the next several years and pursue my spiritual calling. But as Pastor Greg said on Sunday, "there are no shortcuts" and I already have a full plate. Uh huh, yeah… fog has cleared, no more whinging. There are a few things that need adjusting – taking more time for family and self by taking my game at work to the next or different level. Getting more rest. Not letting holidays accrue allows me to do both of these. (I have a month’s leave accrued – doh!) De-cluttering my life.

Jj_jan_07_1(JJ on the phone with Tess this morning.)  Watch this space for progress. Meanwhile, back to our regular programming. The above piece of art comes from Sebastian. I love it – isnt it beautiful? He described it as "a building and a house located right here and right here standing together." Seb_jan_07 Sebastian also claimed to make the picture with shaving cream. Not sure how that worked… will have to ask his teachers about that! As you can also see, his face is well on its way to recovery and the bruising not nearly as bad as we all thought it would be after a few days: definitely worthy of praise on the private prayer journal/blog.

The Froggy Hopper

Provided you read my blog just before Seb’s birthday party, you’ll know that The Froggy Hopper was one of the rides in Birthday Bingo. After the first wave of five or so kids arrived, a handful of parents and I started a small herd through the circuit. First stop: The Froggy Hopper. A small line resulted in waiting a few minutes for our turn. The dilemma: one of the kids was frightened of the ride and wanted an adult to accompany him. Let’s call him Josh. Our turn came… five kids and two adults ran to get onto the ride that can seat six kids and one adult. The other adult, a Chinese woman, was in front of our group and took the adult seat. Josh was left out.

The adult from our group, realising she’d made a mistake about where to sit, turned back but not before we successfully encouraged Josh to take the last remaining seat. The Chinese woman then insisted on having her picture, with OUR kids, taken by the ride operator. This took a few minutes during which Josh figured out he was without a familiar adult. Then the trouble began.

First, Josh wanted to be with someone he knew. Second, there was general consensus amongst the adults from our herd, that the adult on the ride with our kids should be from our herd, not someone else. We tried to explain this to the ride operator but her English was very poor. We then appealed to the other adult, would she mind trading with one of us? No… quite indignant she insisted that she was before us in the line and should therefore have first right of refusal to be on the ride. What was a simple debate or issue turned into a full blown argument. By the way, by this time a second Chinese woman was now in line and slipped ahead of us. This happened while our kids were on the ride and technically "not in line!"

While the argument developed steam, we tried to figure out the perspective of the first Chinese woman. The Chinese can be very superstitious… having your picture taken with six mostly blond kids is a sign of very, VERY good luck. Going on a ride with five mostly blondies would probably be the equivalent to winning the lottery in the luck department. We concluded that the woman never expected the possibility we might refuse to let our kids ride with her since everyone was already buckled in. But that’s what happened next.

Once the Chinese woman refused to move, we made the ride operator pull all our kids off… undo the buckle and strap at one end… then the other end… then raise the bar and everyone slides off. Remarkably none of them seemed too distraught at that idea. Everyone patiently lined up again and the Chinese woman – noticeably angered but trying to put on a happy face – went by herself on the empty ride. The ride ended, the Chinese woman left, and all the kids headed towards the empty seats. Not so fast…

Chinese woman #2 was now in the adult seat. Not sure what was going on with her… no happy face on that person and quite grumpy, too. I suspect there was some sort of cross cultural assessment going on… I.e. she had a not so favourable opinion of us and probably made some conclusions about the proceeding incident. Remarkably we stood there as this lady, clearly mad at us, rode on The Froggy Hopper that was once again empty but for one person. We all stood there in wonderment… this poor woman was not even enjoying the ride. She seemed to be more concerned at being right about not letting US ride!

Finally, our turn came and our six kids and adult filled The Froggy Hopper. However, it was just a bit much for Josh. The operator had to stop the ride, let him off by undoing the buckle and strap at one end… then the other end… then raising the bar and so on. Once again the ride began. Everyone had a great ride and we gave Josh a stamp for bravery and being on the ride even for a short time. Off we went to the next ride.

Not so fast…

At some point in the middle of this scene Jasper showed up and wanted to go on The Froggy Hopper. I had to get on with some party responsibilities, therefore delegated this task to De. But no way, JJ would have none of that – he wanted to ride with Daddy – so back we went onto The Froggy Hopper. A quick success when just at the end Sebastian showed up. BUSTED. When he saw me on The Froggy Hopper with JJ he snapped. I might have had a tougher stance on another day, but his birthday and everything… I quickly ran to Seb and convinced him that we should ride on the The Froggy Hopper right away. So back in the line we went.

Not so fast… JJ wanted in on the action. Sure kid, just jump the que… there ya go, welcome to the team. We finally got on the ride, along with a friend of Seb’s, who like Josh was a little frightened of the ride. So down we came, she got off, strapped the ride back up and UP we went. By this time I was starting to think, "I have GOT to get off this ride.  I am going crazy!"

Not so fast… Sela showed up and immediately went into whinging/crying mode. Something we see a lot of in her these days. "Sorry, Princess, I’m done." She got over it. Needless to say, I didn’t get my Birthday Bingo Card filled up, but I did get about ten stamps for riding The Froggy Hopper! Below is some vid and pics thrown together from the party. Sorry, there isn’t much more than The Froggy Hopper. I think I’m done with that ride for a while. Aiya!

The Making of Sebastian’s Birthday Cake

Here is a fun video depicting the making of Sebastian’s birthday cake the night before his birthday party. The video is a little long but I think viewers will enjoy the pace and end product. And there is a little craziness in the middle, too. Having now posted this video below, in a few days I will post some pictures from the actual party and how the kids received the Buzz Lightyear Birthday Cake… meanwhile, enjoy the production below.

Seb’s IFC Drawing

Ifc2_1Ifc_2 As Tess wrote, the day Sebastian smacked his head, he was on a school field trip. Despite the unfortunate end to the academic adventure, Sebastian remembered what he saw and learned something on that day. Evidence of that can be found in the attached pictures… recognize the building? It is Hong Kong’s very fancy and sexy IFC Tower. The little design at the top of Seb’s drawing is what gave it away for me! And speaking pictures… don’t venture too far because I will deliver some birthday party pictures and video in the next 1.5 days!

Birthday Prep

Sebs_5th_inviteEven though Sebastian’s birthday is not until next week, today is Sebastian’s birthday party. We are holding it at Ocean Park (one of Seb’s favourite places) with about a dozen of Sebastian’s friends. We are getting away from the playground parties with 40 kids and sixty adults. (For this birthday, anyway!) At left is the invite we sent out, on the back of which was a map of Ocean Park to show people where to meet. It’s been a typical morning of loud kids while we run around getting organized. The kids all seem to be in bad, whingey moods… why does that always happen on the days you want your kids to be best behaved?

Birthday_bingoWe’ve also planned "Birthday Bingo." Each little friend attending will receive a card (see attached – the card is half-page, double sided, but you’re looking at both sides). Each time they complete one of the designated rides in "Kiddieland" they will get a stamp (or chop as it is called in Hong Kong.) Once they fill all the chops they will get their party bag. Funny story about the rides, too. A while ago Sebastian said to me after being asked what ride he liked the best,  "I like the Froggy Hopper!"

Yes, there is a cake… a close runner-up to Nemo from 2004. Watch for pictures, details and even a video (duh, surprise). Even though this is only a runner-up, I doubt anyone will be disappointed – Sebastian was certainly excited.  Stay tuned!

The einsteins I made at school

Camhong Saturday night in Hong Kong and we have had quite the day. Some friends of ours invited us out on their extremely large, modern (and beautiful) Chinese junk. We took the entire gang, starting from 11:30 AM and returning to the dock at 7 PM. Overall we had an incredible and wonderful time, but it was also a huge amount of work managing four toddlers on a 60 foot yacht. Carys was still under the weather, but we felt well enough that she’d be okay. She slept much of the time, but required either Tess or myself attending to her for the entire trip. This meant the other half had three kids to juggle. The other adults and older kids were very helpful so the whole trip worked out in the end. Not only did a we have a yacht voyage, we also had a romp on the beach, a tube ride and several high speed boat rides as others were tubing. I took lots of video and pictures that I’ll post in the next few days.

In the meantime, two weeks ago Sebastian came home with one of the most hilarious art projects we’d ever seen… the human digestive track. Don’t believe me? Have a look at the video and Sebastian will show you himself… make sure your speakers are turned up and please leave Seb a You Tube rating. He worked hard to provide a clear, concise explanation of his Einstein project.

Fish Skeleton

Fish_skeleton_sep_2006Sebastian, now in a new school and third year of kindy – SWCK (Small World Christian Kindergarten) – after two years at ESF Kindergarten (English Schools Foundation) is starting to settle in nicely to his new environs. Last week he learned about bones. "Without bones," Sebastian ethusiastically reports, "we would all be jelly fish!"

Last week SWCK had the kids in Seb’s class do a brilliant, two-day art project. First, on Day One all the students painted the backgrounds for their projects. The artwork was left to dry overnight. Then on Day Two they made fish skeletons… I think a little adult chalk may have helped the kids along, but after that glue was applied and toothpicks laid in place so the paper trouts didn’t turn into jelly fish.

Instead of bringing artwork home each day as it is completed (the ESF strategy) SWCK has the kids come home at the end of each week with an art folder full of the week’s accomplishments. Last Friday night we sat down with Sebastian who proudly explained each item as he pulled them out of the folder. Of course, the Fish Skeleton was the week’s finest masterpiece, with a deep, subtle background contrasting the pine-coloured toothpicks. When interviewed Mr. Caldwell explained, "This (the Q-Tip) is the ocean."

Fish Skeleton, possibly Sir Sebastian’s most creative tour de force to date, starts with a modest "priceless" comment. Can you match that? In the back please, yes, what do I hear?

Seb prays for a superhero…

Seb_poseThe other day, on a lonely Sunday afternoon when there weren’t a lot of kids around, the mother of one of Sebastian’s friends called on behalf of her son, Jimmy. Tess answered the phone and the discussion went something like this:

"Hi, Tess, this is Jenny, is Sebastian coming down to the playground?" asked Jenny in her gorgeous and charming British accent.

"Yes, he’s just getting changed and will be down shortly. Will Jimmy be on the playground?"

"Oh yes, he’s quite bored actually and wants Seb to come play with him right away!"

Jun06_seb_incred_1"Is Jimmy dressed up as Mr. Incredible?"

"No, actually, he’s Dash this afternoon," said Jenny, her tone shifting slightly to disapproving while at the same time knowing she was about to say something funny and cheeky.

"Really," replied Tess inquisitively. "How did that come about?"

"Well apparently," reported Jenny, "Mr. Sebastian Incredible told Jimmy the other day, that Mr. Sebastian Incredible was praying for a little boy for Mr. Incredible. I guess Jimmy wants to answer his prayer by being dressed as Dash…"

Thank you for your message

The last several weeks have been quite busy with the Walk To Emmaus. The Men’s WTE in Hong Kong was from May 11 – 14 and I was on the "conference team." I.e. assisting the Leaders with guiding and debriefing the various talks. The WTE was held at Maryknoll in Stanley, Hong Kong. The Women’s WTE was held the weekend after the men’s from May 18 – 21. Tess was a participant. Tess shared a little about that on her blog. I was mostly looking after The Kids, while dropping by every so often to provide behind-the-scenes support to the women’s WTE.

My WTE was very good for me, and essentially was all about my obedience to God. There were many fathers on the WTE and during the weekend the discussions naturally turned to parenting. An inquiry commenced where we asked questions such as, "Who do our children see when they look at us? Do they see a cynical, busy person rushing around answering e-mails on the Blackberry? OR, do they see a calm, patient teacher… leader… or even Jesus?"

Similarly, who do we see when we look at our children? Do we see a naughty, cranky kid… OR do we see God’s grace… innocence, love… or even Jesus?

The Monday morning after the men’s WTE Sebastian came into our room as usual to wake me up…

Seb crawled into bed and after snuggling under the covers reached over to pick up my small travel Bible from my bedside table. As he flipped through the pages I asked him, "Would you like me to read a story from the Bible?"

"No thank you," he replied, "I will read it."

He flipped through the pages and at one point his finger traced down a page. As he did, he recited the letters and numbers that he recognised…

"B… S… 2… 1…" he read confidently. Then he muttered about reading more and thumbed a few pages while saying matter-of-factly:

"My Daddy’s Bible doesn’t have pictures. We have to read the words to see Jesus."

Turning more pages he finally settled on a page on the left, pointed to the middle of a verse and said in a very soft but clear-as-a-bell tone:

"Dear People, Jesus and God love you."

Sebastian then moved his finger over to the right hand page, found a verse and said in an equally soft voice:

"Dear Jesus, thank you for your message."

An incredibly sweet, timeless moment and better than anything I could have read that morning from The Bible. The moment also confirmed for me that Sebastian actually listens in Sunday school.

This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
